LINA x TUW
SYMPOSIUM, EXHIBITION
THU, 22.5., 16:00-20:00 – PRECHTLSAAL, TU WIEN

Over the past three years, the Research Unit Architectural Typology at the Institute of Architectural Design, TU Wien, has actively collaborated with emerging practitioners in architecture and design to confront the climate crisis. Through our participation in the LINA European Architecture Platform, we have forged connections across Europe, thereby establishing a novel research and educational focus: a bioregional approach that understands architecture and design as integrative practices engaging holistically with the locally specific ecosystems involved in building production.

Confronted with the significant environmental impact of the construction sector, it is imperative to transform modes of production. Architecture today has to respond to the availability of resources, where conditions of scarcity foster specificity and innovation. However, within this urgency lies an intriguing aspect: a renewed sensitivity to materials, textures, haptics, and a curiosity for infrastructures and ecosystems at scales often complex to comprehend.

Such a paradigmatic shift compels a redefinition of roles within architectural education and practice. Addressing the demands of systemic change requires a broadening of competencies and also raises critical questions concerning expertise and disciplinary boundaries. Preparing future practitioners necessitates educational frameworks that emphasize collaboration over competition and cultivate interdisciplinary knowledge.

To address these challenges, it is imperative that innovative models of collaboration are established. Universities, industries, and public stakeholders are urged to move beyond isolated responsibilities and adopt processes of open and collective innovation. Foundational to this initiative are practices of mutual learning and the construction of a common ground founded on mutual trust.
